“There’s good deeds and there’s good intention - They’re as far apart as heaven and hell.”

-Ben Harper

Navi Pillay is a South African judge and jurist who is best known for her long-standing efforts to promote world peace, uphold international law and hold states and leaders accountable for war crimes and human rights violations. She excelled and inspired others at her job as the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights from 2008 to 2014. Today, 10 years later, she won the Nobel Peace Prize for her outstanding work. She is the perfect instance of someone who does good things for the sake of doing good, not for recognition or money. Not for moral dessert. These are the kinds of people we should believe in today, in a world of uncertainty.

Cool things she did

In 1967, she started her career by becoming the first woman in South Africa’s Natal Province to open a law firm where she defended and represented anti-apartheid activists and political prisoners, including Nelson Mandela.

In 1995, she was the first woman of colour to serve as a Judge on the high court of South Africa.

In 2004, she was elected as the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights where she went on to protect the human rights of many minorities at the time and used her platform as one of the biggest officials in the United Nations at the time to advocate for accountability and international law, reinforcing the authority of international courts and speaking out against impunity, war crimes, and human rights violations across the world. Everything she’s done has been with the intent of advocating for human rights and peace across the world.

What is moral dessert?

Moral dessert is the philosophical concept that an individual is entitled to a specific positive or negative outcome based on the actions that they make in this universe. The most ethical people are usually the ones who do good things for the sake of doing good, without seeking moral dessert like recognition or money. Navi Pillay was more than entitled to the Nobel Peace Prize, but that doesn't mean she did all those good things because she wanted to win the prize. She did them because she cared about the world.

What makes a person selfless isn’t just their action, but also their intention

Donald Trump recently complained at a rally and condemned Navi Pillay for winning the Nobel peace prize, and that he should have gotten it. He also criticized the entire country of Norway.

“The United States of America, represented by me as your president, should have received the Nobel peace prize, but didn’t. And this is an indelible stain on the country of Norway, and those people that made such a disgraceful and embarrassing decision.”

He went on to refer to Pillay as someone whom “Nobody has ever heard of”.

There are so many things wrong with what he said, but the biggest problem with him is that he sees power and recognition as the reason for doing what he thinks is good. He has done irreversible damage to the United States and the entire world for that matter, because he wants to be seen as powerful, and because he wants to be seen, full stop.

When you have people like Donald Trump who do terrible things for our world and expect applause and recognition in return, that’s usually a sign that they shouldn’t be running an entire country.

When you have people like Jimmy Donaldson (f.k.a Mr Beast) who do good things but only for the sake of making money and getting recognition online, it is a sign that the person doing that doesn’t actually care too much about the wellbeing of the people they are helping.

But when you have people like Navi Pillay, people who do good things not for recognition, and not for money, but simply because they want the world to be a better place, those are the people we should take after. Those are the people who should inspire us to do better.

So next time you want to do a good deed, don’t eat the moral dessert. Don’t do good things for recognition from others, or money as a reward, do good things for the sake of making the world a better place. Pay for the person behind you at the drive-thru. Or don't go to the drive-thru at all, because fast food conglomerates are evil and you shouldn't support them. Donate anonymously. Never stop speaking up about what you believe in. Do good because you want the world to be a better place.
